WHY SHOULD I RENT RED?

need we say more?

OK, so we probably don’t need to, but we will anyway.

RED cameras shoot the future — soon to be current — cinema standard of 4K, which, on the RED Scarlet and RED Epic specifically, is a resolution of 4096 x 2160. A single frame of footage shot at 4K on a RED Scarlet or Epic equates to 8.8 megapixels in size. This massive resolution allows for a huge amount of flexibility in post, such as re-framing shots with minimal resoluton loss, and when downsized to 2K — a typical resolution for cinematic delivery — retains so much more detail than if you were to shoot at that resolution natively on a different camera.

Both the RED Scarlet and RED Epic cameras use the same sensor — “Mysterium-X” — which is 27.7 x 14.6mm in size, or about the surface area of a traditional Super 35 film frame. When compared to a Full Frame 35mm sensor on a stills camera, such as the Canon 5D, the Mysterium-X has a crop factor of 1.73x when capturing footage at 4K. This means you can use all of your APS-C stills lenses as well, giving you a huge array of glass to choose from, and at pretty much any budget that’ll suit your pocket. The Mysterium-X also has an incredible 13.5 stops of Dynamic Range, allowing the smoothest of gradients — or roll-offs — between the brightest and darkest portions of the same scenes, and captures 16 bits of colour, which produces utterly jaw-dropping colour fidelity.

One of the main differences between the RED Scarlet / Epic and other professional motion picture cameras, is the way the footage is processed within the camera. Enter RED’s own, proprietary, lossless codec; R3DCODE RAW — the core of the RED experience. Unlike many other cameras that utilise highly lossy codecs to process their sensor’s data-stream, REDCODE uses a very clever and unique algorithm that heavily compresses the RAW data-stream from the sensor, but without compromising the image quality… and the beauty isn’t just skin deep, either. Where footage captured using other codecs simply falls apart when subjected to a fairly usual post production routine, footage captured using REDCODE will withstand the most aggressive of colour correction and grading techniques, and welcomes being put through the absolute apogee of intensive visual effects manipulation, too.

So hey, if you want to shoot with a RED camera, yet have been intimidated by the huge rental costs, our ready-to-shoot RED Epic package is YOUR ticket!
